ABOUT BOTSWANA

Botswana offers a diverse array of stunning natural landscapes, from the serene, crystal-clear waterways of the Okavango Delta to the vast herds of elephants roaming the Chobe National Park. Contrasting this, the parched, arid expanses of the Kalahari Desert create an unforgettable backdrop. This landlocked country is truly a premier safari destination, blessed with some of Africa's most breathtaking protected areas and an exceptional diversity of wildlife.

ABOUT CHOBE NATIONAL PARK

Chobe National Park, located in northern Botswana along the mighty Chobe River, is renowned as one of Africa's premier wildlife destinations. Spanning an impressive 11,700 square kilometers, it is the third largest park in Botswana and boasts a remarkably diverse array of landscapes and habitats. From the lush floodplains and marshy channels along the river, to the dense teak woodlands and baobab-studded valleys inland, Chobe offers incredible scenic beauty.

However, it is the park's staggering concentration of wildlife that draws visitors from around the globe. Chobe is world-famous for its enormous elephant herds, believed to be the largest surviving continuous population on the African continent with numbers around 120,000. Visitors can expect unparalleled elephant viewing and interactions. Chobe is also home to huge populations of other iconic species like buffalo, lions, leopards, cheetahs, packs of endangered African wild dogs, and over 460 species of birds. The Chobe River itself acts as an oasis, attracting an incredible diversity of wildlife to its life-giving waters.

A major draw is the opportunity for both land and water-based safari activities. Game drives along the river's edge provide thrilling elephant and predator sightings, while river cruises get you up close to creatures like hippos, crocodiles and a kaleidoscope of birdlife. With many luxury lodges and mobile camps inside and bordering Chobe, it offers a truly unforgettable safari experience in one of Africa's most remarkable wilderness areas.

ABOUT THE OKAVANGO DELTA

The Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most extraordinary wildlife destinations in the world. Located in the heart of Botswana, this vast inland delta offers a rare and remarkable ecosystem where desert meets water. Each year, floodwaters from the Angolan highlands transform this arid region into a lush paradise, creating a vibrant tapestry of waterways, lagoons, and islands.

Home to an astonishing variety of species, from the iconic Big Five—lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino—to rare birds like the African skimmer and Pel's fishing owl, the delta provides an immersive experience for nature lovers. Game drives, mokoro (dugout canoe) trips, and guided bush walks offer unique ways to explore this stunning landscape and witness wildlife in their natural habitat.

Whether you're seeking adventure, peace, or simply a chance to reconnect with nature, the Okavango Delta offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Fascinating Facts about the Okavango Delta:

Size: The Okavango Delta covers an area between 15,000 and 22,000 square kilometers (5,800 to 8,500 square miles), depending on seasonal flooding. It is one of the largest inland deltas in the world.

Water Volume: Approximately 11 cubic kilometers (11,000 billion liters) of water flow into the delta annually, primarily from the Okavango River, yet very little of it reaches the ocean. Most of the water evaporates or seeps into the Kalahari Desert sands.

Flooding Cycle: The delta's floodwaters take about six months to travel from the source in Angola, usually arriving between May and July, during Botswana’s dry season. This makes the delta a unique, seasonal oasis in the midst of arid land.

Biodiversity Hotspot: The Okavango Delta is home to over 130 species of mammals, more than 400 species of birds, and around 70 species of fish, making it one of Africa’s most important wildlife refuges.

"Jewel of the Kalahari": Often referred to as the "Jewel of the Kalahari," the delta is a crucial freshwater resource and acts as a natural filter, cleaning the waters that pass through it.

ABOUT MAKGADIKGADI PANS

The Makgadikgadi Pans are a vast network of salt pans located in the northern part of Botswana, covering an area of over 16,000 square kilometers. These salt flats are the remnants of what was once the largest inland lake in Africa, known as Lake Makgadikgadi.

The Makgadikgadi Pans are characterized by their stark, otherworldly landscapes - expansive, flat salt pans stretching out as far as the eye can see, broken only by the occasional solitary baobab tree or rocky outcrop. During the rainy season, the pans can transform into a temporary wetland, attracting large concentrations of migratory wildlife such as wildebeest, zebra, and flamingos.

Despite the harsh, arid conditions, the Makgadikgadi Pans support a diverse array of wildlife, including the endangered brown hyena, meerkats, and the world's largest population of endangered African wild dogs. The pans are also home to the Kalahari lion, a unique subspecies adapted to the dry, sandy environment.

Visitors to the Makgadikgadi Pans can explore the mesmerizing landscapes on guided walking, 4x4, or quad bike safaris. Some of the key attractions within the pans include Kubu Island, a rocky outcrop with ancient baobab trees, and the Baines' Baobabs, a group of seven majestic baobab trees.
